Steve McRae, Accompanist (March 2016 to June 2016): Steve is very excited to be the accompanist for the Hamilton Gay Men’s Chorus!
Growing up in the small town of Erin, Ontario, Steve McRae has been playing piano since he was 8 years old. He played in musicals, recitals, and ensembles while in high school. Moving to Hamilton in 2004, Steve graduated, with honours, from the Applied Music Program at Mohawk College, studying jazz piano with Adrean Farrugia. Steve successfully completed his A.R.C.T. diploma in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music, also achieving honours status, in the summer of 2005 under the instruction of Ms. Irene McLellan, F.R.C.M.T. In 2011, Steve graduated Summa Cum Laude from McMaster University’s Honours Music Program.
Steve has performed in many venues throughout Southern Ontario. He is in demand as a soloist for weddings and corporate events, as an accompanist for performances and examinations, an adjudicator, and as a band member for numerous other functions from jazz to rock and roll. Based out of Hamilton, Steve teaches extensively throughout the week at multiple studios, in addition to maintaining a small roster of private students. He is also the Music Director at Laidlaw Memorial United Church.
Throughout 2011-2013, Steve was hired as keyboardist for the arts-oriented theatre program Art Smart. In addition, he was the musical director, pianist, and synthesizer player for Hammer Entertainment’s 2009 production of “The Lucky Stiff”, and their 2014 production of “Side Show”, for which the music was well received. In the past four years, Steve has been the pianist and Music Director for several other theatrical productions, including “Nunsense”, “Clue”, “Young Frankenstein”, “Nine”, “The Addams Family”, “Gypsy”, “Jekyll and Hyde” and the Canadian premiere performance of “Heathers: The Musical”. He will also be the Musical Director and pianist for Hammer Entertainment’s April 2016 production of “Ragtime”.
